Post 3: Storytelling

This podcast is created by Sarah Koenig and the Serial staff.
They have taken one question -
Is Adnan Syed guilty of Hae Min Lee's murder?
- and turned it into a 12 episode story.

In your response to this post, answer the following questions.
1. Some may argue that this story is almost like a Shakespeare play. Would you agree?
2. How is this podcast similar or different to other stories or plays you've read or watched before?
3. List three characteristics this story has with other dramas.

Next, read your classmates' posts and respond to one. Your classmates have given examples of how this story is or is not similar to a drama. Give an example from the Serial that relates to your classmate's example.

  1. 1. No I wouldn't agree. Shakespeare plays have more dramatized, unrealistic bases. Some have to do with death and/or murder, but it's not dealt with the same way as I see Serial. It is different from what I normally watch. Mostly because it is a series so their is more than just one episode arguing the main point of the whole series to get the listener to really think about every aspect in the case. Their are plenty of movies that portray an upset boyfriend or girlfriend that had just been dumped and take things to extreme revengeful levels like the movies She Devil, Legally Blonde, and War of the Roses.

    1. I agree on it not being like a Shakespearian play, due to the fact that Shakespeare loved to add the drama and flare that isn't shown in Serial.

  3. 1. I would agree that it is like shakespeare.
    2. This is similar to other stories because it has a theme that you have to figure out and it has main characters. Problem solving and logical thinking throughout the whole story, and it is an easy way to learn how to use essays because there is lots of quotes and certain views of other people.
    3. Suspenseful, Addicting, Mysterious

  4. 1. I do not agree that this is like Shakespeare.
    2. This podcast is similar to many other stories because you have to figure out who did it. A lot of books and shows now a days are ones that you have to figure out what happened.

  5. 1. I don't think that this is like a Shakespeare play. While Shakespeare did have many plays that related to real life, I don't really see Shakespeare taking the time to go over every small morning detail as is what happens in the Serial podcast. Shakespeare was all about the dramatic, not the morning bits and piece behind the scenes.
    2. For me, Serial is like a much more in depth version of an episode of Criminal Minds or Law and Order. It gives the details that I sometimes wonder about while watching an episode. I usually want to know the whole back story of a character, but it never gets shown, where as Serial is all about telling Adnan's back story in order to figure out if he is the type of person that would kill another human being.
    3. The three characteristics of a drama in serial for me would be, Love, Revenge, and Major Conflict
