Post 5: An Ongoing Investigation...

At this point you may have realized...

...that as this podcast was being recorded, Sarah Koenig was in the middle of her ongoing investigation of Adnan's case. She was learning more and more information each week. This means she didn't know the ending of her story when she began.

This is different type of storytelling than what we are used to in English class. Most authors will have a basic outline or skeleton of a story before they begin. They know the ending. Serial is different. It's like we are looking over Sarah's shoulder as she works on her research.

At this point, I'd like you to do some of your own research. Find one piece of evidence that you think would be relevant to this investigation. Do some research outside of what is provided on the podcast website --> serialpodcast.org. Get creative.

Example research ideas:
  • map of an area in the case
  • google search of a witness and your findings
  • newspaper article from a local paper like The Baltimore Sun
  • locate court documents from the original trial and see what they say
Think outside the box.

In the comments below, explain what your research was and how it is relevant to the case. What did you learn? Where did you find the information?

  1. My Research was on Ayla Reynolds. She is a 20 month old baby girl. She went missing on October 23, 2013. They say her mother and father know what happened to Ayla. This story is relevant to this case because they are two stories about two people who went missing and no one knows who did it.

  2. Alyssa Mclemore was a 21 year old woman who went missing in 2009. She was last seen talking to an unknown person in a car.Her grandmother spoke to her over cellphone at around 6:30pm, were she stated that she was on her way home. Their was a 911 call that was made from her phone at around 9:30pm that same night. The dispatcher heard a women asking for help but not straight to the mic of the phone, like she was being attacked. She has not been seen or heard from again, leaving behind a three year old daughter.

It relates to Adnans case through the fact that Alyssa was maybe kidnapped or killed in a car. Also, Their are recorded phone calls for evidence in Alyssa’s case, just like in Adnan’s case.
